Escacs Balàfia narrowly misses the title at the 2026 Lleida Blitz Championship

On Sunday, July 5th, Bellpuig hosted the 2026 Lleida Territorial Blitz Championship, one of the most exciting events in the local chess calendar. A total of 43 players from ten clubs competed over nine rounds at a fast-paced time control of three minutes plus two seconds increment per move.

Escacs Balàfia was represented by five players: Ricard Bringué González, Mohammad Amin Piltan, Miguel Ángel Vicente, Miquel Vicente, and Joan Vicente. The team showed competitiveness, strong team spirit, and the ability to challenge some of the strongest players in the region.

Ricard Bringué, one game away from the title fight

The standout performance for Balàfia came from Ricard Bringué. Starting as number 3 in the initial ranking, he confirmed from the very first round that he was a serious title contender, opening the tournament with a win against David Monzonis.

Ricard remained on the top boards throughout the event and reached the decisive stage with real chances of becoming champion. The competition was extremely tight: before the final round, three players shared the lead with 7 points.

In the end, Joshua Solaní and Ferran Eloi Gutiérrez reached 8 points, while Ricard finished with an excellent 7 out of 9. He secured fourth place, tied on points with Jordi Capdevila, who finished third, missing the podium due to tiebreaks.

There was no trophy this time, but Ricard was just one game away from winning the tournament. An outstanding performance that confirms his strength in fast time controls.

A spectacular start by Mohammad Amin Piltan

Mohammad Amin Piltan also delivered one of the highlights of the tournament. Starting from position 13 in the initial ranking, he achieved three consecutive wins in the first three rounds.

Particularly notable was his second-round victory against Jaume Ribera, ranked number 2 and one of the strongest players in the event. He then defeated Joan Gensana to temporarily join the leaders with a perfect score.

The difficulty of later pairings saw him face players such as Ferran Eloi Gutiérrez, Josep Boldú, Ángel Flórez, and Héctor García. Mohammad Amin finished in 13th place with 5 points, maintaining his initial ranking and proving he can compete at the highest level.

Fight and experience across all boards

Miguel Ángel Vicente also started strong, winning his first-round game against Joel Serrano. He finished the tournament in 28th place with 4 points.

Miquel Vicente, who started from position 31, also scored 4 points and finished 29th, improving two places from his initial ranking.

Joan Vicente, the youngest member of the Balàfia team, began from position 44. With 3 points, he finished in 38th place, gaining six positions and valuable competitive experience.

Third place for Balàfia in the team standings

The combined scores of the club’s top three players —7 points from Ricard Bringué, 5 from Mohammad Amin Piltan, and 4 from Miguel Ángel Vicente— gave Escacs Balàfia a total of 16 points.

This result secured third place in the team standings, behind C.E. Mollerussa with 19 points and C.E. Pardinyes with 16.5.

Although none of our five players won an individual prize this time, the overall result is very positive. We fought for the title until the final round, competed on the top boards, and once again placed Escacs Balàfia among the strongest clubs in the Lleida region.

Thanks to Ricard, Mohammad Amin, Miguel Ángel, Miquel, and Joan for representing our colors with effort, sportsmanship, and ambition.

Every tournament makes us stronger, and every game brings us closer to our next big result. We keep working, because Balàfia’s best move is yet to come. Let’s go, Balàfia!
