Chess Masterclass with Grandmaster Herminio Herraiz in Lleida

On Saturday, 21 November 2026, the Centre Cívic de Balàfia in Lleida will host a special event for chess enthusiasts. This is a unique opportunity to learn, deepen your understanding of the game and continue improving your chess with Grandmaster Herminio Herraiz.

The Club d’Escacs Balàfia warmly invites all our club members, as well as chess players and enthusiasts from other clubs, to take part in this masterclass.

Whether you compete regularly or simply want to understand positions better and make stronger decisions over the board, this session is designed to help you take your chess to the next level.

Two key topics to improve your chess

During the masterclass, we will explore two important aspects of chess that can help you understand your games more deeply and make better decisions.

♟️ 1. Endgames with minor pieces

Endgames involving bishops and knights require precision, technique and a sound understanding of piece activity and pawn structures.

Learning how to evaluate these positions, identify the right plans and recognise tactical and strategic resources can make the difference between winning, drawing or letting a promising position slip away.

♟️ 2. The concept of initiative in chess: when to use it

Understanding who has the initiative and, more importantly, when to take advantage of it is one of the keys to practical chess.

When should you play actively? When is it better to focus on defence? How can you use time and piece activity to put your opponent under pressure?

We will explore the concept of initiative and examine the situations in which taking control of the game can be the right strategic decision.

Learn from a Grandmaster and keep improving

Learning directly from a Grandmaster is a valuable experience that can introduce new ideas, deepen your understanding of chess and help you recognise details that might otherwise go unnoticed in your own games.

Our goal is to bring together players from Club d’Escacs Balàfia and chess enthusiasts from other clubs for a day of learning, training and shared passion for the game.

Whatever club you belong to, if you want to learn, improve and enjoy chess, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss!
