Balàfia Competes with Two Teams in the Catalan Team Rapid Chess Championship

Balàfia A1 and Balàfia A2 represented the club in an intense nine-round competition, with the first team enjoying a particularly strong run and reaching the top of its group standings.

Club Escacs Balàfia took part in the 2026 Catalan Team Rapid Chess Championship with two teams on 27 September, in a demanding day of competition where fast thinking, concentration and accurate decision-making were essential.

The participation of Balàfia A1 and Balàfia A2 provided an excellent opportunity for the club’s players to test themselves against opponents of different strengths and backgrounds, while gaining valuable competitive experience.

Entering two teams in a championship of this level is particularly meaningful. It reflects a collective effort and a commitment to the club’s sporting project, giving more players the opportunity to compete, learn and continue developing their chess skills.

Balàfia A1 Makes Its Mark on the Standings

One of the highlights of the tournament was the performance of Balàfia A1, which entered the penultimate round leading its group standings. This position reflected the team’s strong performance throughout much of the competition and its ability to challenge demanding opponents.

The team produced several good results across the nine rounds, including a 3–1 victory against Cambrils B and an impressive 4–0 win over Torrenegra C.

However, the final stages proved challenging. Balàfia A1 lost 1.5–2.5 against Lleida B and 1–3 against Prat A in the last two rounds.

The team eventually finished 25th overall, scoring 19 game points. Despite the final position, reaching the top of its group before the final round was an achievement worth highlighting and demonstrated the team’s competitiveness throughout the championship.

Daniel Cosialls Leads the Individual Performances

Among the individual performances, Daniel Cosialls Baz stood out with 7 points from 8 games for Balàfia A1, one of the team’s strongest individual scores.

Josep Maria Virgili Sanroma also contributed significantly, scoring 5 points from 8 games. Ricard Bringue González and Miguel Ángel Vicente Oliva each scored 3.5 points from 8 games. Jordi Borràs Burgues was also part of the squad and played four games.

These results highlight the contributions made across the team’s boards in a format where every individual point can have a significant impact on the overall standings.

Balàfia A2: Building Experience and Developing Players

The club’s second team, Balàfia A2, also completed all nine rounds and finished 38th overall, with 16 game points.

Its participation provided valuable experience in a competitive field featuring players of different strengths and playing styles.

Among the team’s best results were 3–1 victories against Vallfogona B, Llinars E and Mollerussa B. Balàfia A2 also drew its matches against Montblanc B, Mollerussa A2 and Rubinenca D.

In the individual standings, Carlos Aparicio Bañeres scored 4 points from 7 games, while Rodrigo Bermúdez Monlleó and Joan Vicente Casaseca each scored 3 points from 6 games. Antonio García Giné scored 2 points from 5 games, while Miquel Vicente Casaseca and Manuel Nicolás Domingo Díez de la Lastra each scored 2 points from 6 games.

The experience gained in this championship will help the players continue improving, both individually and as part of a team.

Two Teams, One Shared Commitment to Chess

The participation of Balàfia A1 and Balàfia A2 demonstrates Club Escacs Balàfia’s commitment to maintaining an active competitive programme and providing opportunities for players across the club.

Having two teams and being able to include reserve players is an important asset. It offers greater flexibility, allows the club to manage its squads more effectively and creates additional opportunities for players to gain experience in demanding competitions.

In rapid chess, where players must combine speed, accuracy and concentration, every game is an opportunity to learn. Team results matter, but so do the players’ commitment, regular competitive experience and the collective effort behind each squad.

The Catalan Team Rapid Chess Championship was therefore another valuable opportunity for Balàfia to strengthen its sporting project and continue building its presence in Catalan chess.

Congratulations to all the players from Balàfia A1 and Balàfia A2 for their participation, dedication and commitment throughout the competition!
