Tots els nens juguem! – Chess and community with Club d’Escacs Balàfia
On Saturday at 4:30 p.m., Club d’Escacs Balàfia hosted a very special event as part of the European Week of Sport, an initiative that promotes physical activity and citizen engagement across Europe. The event was part of the youth chess circuit throughout the province of Lleida and contributed to the club’s candidacy for the EU Sport Awards in the Inclusion category, highlighting our commitment to integration, equal opportunities, and the social value of chess.
The day was filled with the enthusiasm and dedication of the under-16 players, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude. Their energy and passion are the best guarantee that grassroots chess will continue to grow strongly in Lleida. The club hopes to repeat this experience next year, consolidating a project that combines sport, education, and community.
The tournament also delivered outstanding results:
- Miquel Vicente, runner-up in the under-16 category.
- Joan Vicente, best under-10 player and third overall in the tournament.
- Daniel Palau, in his very first official tournament representing Club d’Escacs Balàfia, showing talent and commitment at the start of his competitive journey.
These players are a source of pride for the entire chess community of Balàfia.
We would like to recognize the Catalan Chess Federation, whose support for grassroots chess and collaboration in organizing tournaments strengthens the sport across the province. Our gratitude also goes to tournament arbiter Israel Campos, whose excellent work was essential to the smooth running of the competition.
Finally, we thank the Diputació de Lleida, the Ajuntament de Lleida, the Associació de Veïns de Balàfia, and Dona Balàfia for their ongoing support of sport and community life.
