Club Escacs Balàfia ends the 2026 Catalan League just short of the title and reinforces its role in chess in Lleida
A season to be proud of: the title slipped away by a single game in the final round, and Balàfia finishes fourth after fighting until the very end.
The 2026 Catalan League is now over and, at Club Escacs Balàfia, we close it with a mix of pride, ambition and gratitude. It has been an intense, competitive and exciting season right up to the very last moment, one of those seasons that leaves a mark. We came very close to reaching the top, with real chances of fighting for the league title until the final round, and only one game separated us from an even greater ending. In the end, our team finished in 4th place, but that result does not fully reflect the level, consistency and enthusiasm that Balàfia showed throughout the entire competition.
From the very first round, the team showed that this would not be just any league campaign. Balàfia competed with solidity, commitment and character, collecting important points and always staying near the top of the standings. Round after round, the group rose to demanding challenges, both at home and away, and reached the decisive stretch of the competition in a privileged position. This was no coincidence, but the result of constant work, preparation for every match, and a team spirit that has been one of the club’s greatest strengths in this final stage of the league.
As often happens in chess, the outcome was decided by small details. And this year those details were minimal. Very minimal. So much so that the difference between completing an extraordinary season with the title or finishing fourth came down to a single game in the final round. That is, at the same time, the reason for the competitive disappointment and the clearest proof of the outstanding championship Balàfia has played. We were one step away, we competed on equal terms, and we stayed in the race until the very end in a league that was highly balanced, demanding and contested right down to the last boards.
That is why, beyond the final standings, this end of the league should also be read in a positive light. Club Escacs Balàfia has once again shown that it is a living project, with its own identity and the ability to play a leading role in chess in Lleida. The team competed with seriousness, ambition and respect for its opponents, but also with club pride and a strong sense of belonging. When a team reaches the final round with real chances of winning the league, it is because it has done many things well. And this year Balàfia did many things right.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the players who took part during the season. To each and every one of them, whether they played one round or were regular members of the lineup, thank you for defending the club’s colors with commitment, responsibility and sportsmanship. Collective achievements cannot be understood without the sum of everyone’s efforts, and this league has been a magnificent example of that.
We would also like to thank the Diputació de Lleida and the Ajuntament de Lleida for their support. Their collaboration is important so that our club can continue to grow, promote chess and consolidate a sporting and social project rooted in the neighborhood and in the city.
We close the 2026 Catalan League with our heads held high. The title was within reach, but the journey we have made only makes us stronger. This team fought until the end, inspired the club and once again made it clear that Balàfia has a great deal to say in Lleida chess. We will keep working, we will keep enjoying the game and we will keep fighting. Because when a league slips away by a single game, what remains is not only the feeling of “almost,” but also the certainty that we are on the right path.
Go Balàfia. Go Lleida chess.
